Good afternoon! In the interest of full transparency and to assure that all information shared is accurate, we wanted to share details of a statement that was made late in the school day. A student at Pikeville High School made a threatening statement that was immediately reported to administration. The student was quickly and immediately placed in the care of the administration and the SRO as the situation was investigated. There were NO weapons in the student's possession and at no time was any student in danger. I appreciate the quick work by our administration, Officer Merlo and the Pikeville Police who joined us in the investigation and addressing the situation. Each of them addressed the situation perfectly per protocol, and have continued to address it accordingly. Thank you for the trust you place in us to always keep your children safe and we hope you always know that the safety of your children is our top priority. Again, at no time were any students in danger. We felt it important to share this information to assure that any concern was lifted based upon discussion of the situation. We hope you have blessed day!

Powerful teaching and high expectations always mean powerful learning at PES! Today, our sixth grade students are exploring the theme of resilience through an article and poem about the 9/11 Survivor Tree. Their thoughtful discussions showed how high expectations and strong teaching inspire students to think deeply and connect to stories of hope and strength. A huge thank you to Bethany Coleman for being such an amazing teacher who always takes our students to the next level! Our teachers are the very best!!! #ResilientPanthers #HighExpectations #NeverForget

Please join us today as we remember and honor the life of James “Buford” Williamson. In 1967, Mr. Williamson joined the Panther Family as Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) and quickly became a respected and valued administrator in the Pikeville Independent School System. You could often find him walking the halls of both schools to check on students or standing at the bus drop-off early in the morning to ensure all students were present and ready to learn. If you weren't there, he'd be calling or knocking on your door to pick you up in his own car to bring you to school. Mr. Williamson understood the value of education, and he understood the value of new experiences. He would always encourage each school to plan field trips to many different places throughout Kentucky. He loved to see our students experience new things and never missed being with them on every summer school trip. It was evident that he held a deep love for children. He not only led with a smile, but he also led by example, which helped to create a culture of compassion and high expectations that continues to define our school today. Through 35 years of dedication in education, he shaped the lives of countless students, fellow educators, and families and left a lasting impression. The example set by him continues to inspire and reminds us that great schools are built by people with great hearts. Thank you, Mr. Williamson, for the part you played in shaping the Pikeville Independent School System. You will forever be part of our story!

Pikeville Independent Schools is excited to welcome the newest member of our team. Officer Jason Merlo joins our team as School Resource Officer assigned to Pikeville High School. Officer Merlo spent over twenty years with the Kentucky State Police, and is a familiar name in our school and community because of his time giving to kids. We are excited and blessed to have Officer Merlo as a member of the Panther Family! Thank you to District Judge Robbie Wright for taking his time this morning to come swear Officer Merlo in here at Pikeville High School. We appreciate him and his willingness to always support the school district!
